#2: My Passion for Photography

To share with you why this art matters to me.

I love everything about photography - it’s always been profound to me how you can capture a moment in time, and from so many different perspectives.

Not only that, but within seconds, the scene can change and give you an entirely different image of vibrant colors or complex layouts.

It helps me to highlight the beauty of every moment, allowing me to be more deeply appreciative of the present while it’s in front of me.

Photography has taught me curiosity, perspective, and patience - amongst so many other things - and continues to provide me an outlet to stretch my imagination. Photography has become even more important during the last year as I leaned further into the creative process to discover more about myself as an artist - which went farther back than I realized.

Everything started with my first camera when I was 10-12 years old (I can’t remember exactly when I started, but this is definitely the age range). Even as a child, I had a deep love for photography; I used to run around the garden, taking pictures of all the flowers and nature every season when the flora started to bloom.

Thing is, this was always just a thing I did for a fun little side hobby - I didn’t truly ‘do’ photography in any ‘official’ manner until I was 23, during my first visit to Japan. Seeing as my photography was simply a fun side hobby, that was the first time ever that I processed my photos in photoshop - and I’ll admit that it changed my entire view of what I was capable of with my photography.

Photography has always been a passion, and my work is still young… but after investing time and energy into my photography abilities, I realize there’s an untapped potential in my creative self!

I have this same yearning to explore photography as I always have, but rather than letting it go undeveloped, now I finally get to explore it.

In time, I hope to expand the scope of what I can do and cultivate my skills to deepen what I currently know.

Titled “Element of Shinto” (2019), this photo was my first published work alongside ‘“Equilibrium” (2019) in the UW Capillaries Journal, Spring 2022 issue.

This was the many moments where I felt like time had halted, my soul had a weight lifted off of it, and my own light shined brighter than ever before.
